Libraries, often seen as serene spaces for knowledge and reflection, can harbour a variety of hazards that pose risks to users and staff alike. From improper storage of materials leading to trip hazards to the potential for mould and poor ventilation affecting air quality, these environments require careful attention to safety protocols. Additionally, electrical hazards can arise from overloaded power outlets or faulty equipment, while inadequate lighting may contribute to accidents. Understanding and addressing these hazards is crucial for fostering a safe, inviting library environment.

What are the dangers of a Library?

Libraries carry thousands of books, from the most recent versions to first editions. Protecting both people and property is essential against expected and unpredictable threats. Depending on locations, natural disasters can be great threats to consider. Books being fragile and easily damageable, fires and floods, although on opposite ends of the spectrum, are each as dangerous as the other. Moreover, the number of people present in libraries daily can increase risks. Safe evacuation can be delicate under these circumstances, especially across multiple floors. Man-made threats are also important to keep in mind. May they be there for the library’s property or other reasons, detecting intruders is not always easy. Especially in larger zones of concern then, clear communication is important to make up for it later on.

How to take appropriate precautions?

There are many ways to prevent a disaster. Having appropriate safety plans for staff to follow in a library is essential. Keeping exits noticeable and easy to access for all is also key. In libraries, awareness of surroundings can be relatively low due to focusing on reading or research. Therefore, being able to quickly and loudly alert all concerned of any danger is non-negotiable. Placing appropriate visual cues is also essential for easy signaling and for those with different proficiencies and needs. Protecting the area is necessary at all times, even when no one is on the premises. Due to the potential value of books and other materials on-site, having a reliable safety system in place during both day and night will provide true peace of mind.

Hazavoid offers fully wireless solutions, adaptable to previous infrastructures. Both the Hazavoid Wireless Alarm System (pictured above) and the Hazavoid Wireless Alert Beacon System come with a backup battery and solar panels. Fully modular and customisable, it can adapt to most of your library needs. Using a remote, staff or anyone who notices a danger first can easily alert an entire building at the push of a button. One can strategically place the systems on either walls or poles to suit different infrastructures and layouts. This ensures complete coverage no matter where. It is possible to choose to activate the WiLERT using sensors, as a way to protect a zone of concern at any time of the day or night. Once activated, anyone entering the sensor beam will trigger the flashing beacons, to deter intruders and alert help.
