Work Safety Standards

What are the challenges of Work Safety?

Since 2020, SafeWork NSW was able to help workers with their ‘Speak Up Save Lives’ app. Over 1,200 reports were sent. Still to this day, many rely on it to anonymously call out unsafe work sites. This approach allows workers to protect themselves without the risk of losing their jobs or other bad repercussions. The notion that employees would feel so unsafe at their workplace is a dangerous one. Most times these issues stem from a lack of resources and care. Employers can ensure work safety in many ways and should aim to raise standards each year.

How to make a change?

The fact so many workers still feel so unsafe an app was created for them, is problematic. Daily, more changes can happen for worksites everywhere to be safer. Clear and up-to-date safety communications are essential. Employers should always stay aware of potential concerns and of ways to better a worksite. This must include ways for workers to safely bring up issues or worries. Following this logic, more people on sites must be able to make active decisions. Being the ones at the forefront of any danger, it is essential to provide workers with safety systems to better communicate with each other. Giving them the option to activate safety solutions on their own as soon as a threat arises, for instance, can make all the difference.
