Landslide Hazards

What are the dangers of a Landslide?

Many factors cause landslides every year. It is essential to understand them in order to know how to react to them. A landslide causes large amounts of materials like rocks or mud to move at once suddenly. Distances can vary from a few centimetres to many kilometres. They are caused by different events such as earthquakes or heavy rains. The uncertainty of their overall impacts makes them extremely difficult to prepare against. For this reason, they often produce even more damage. In Australia especially, landslides destroy many houses around the country and cause millions of dollars worth of damage. These issues include roads, buildings, railways, crops, bodily injuries, and loss of life.

How to take appropriate precautions?

Each location will have different landslide risks and severity. If unsure, especially when new to an area, it is essential to contact your local council. Being prepared and aware are key to reducing landslide risks. Knowing the signs is important and can help you know when a landslide is about to happen. These include cracks in plaster or foundation, for instance. Having a plan is also non-negotiable. Knowing when to evacuate and how can make the biggest difference. Packing supplies, as well as evacuation kits, can make the entire process smoother and faster.

Having appropriate insurance is also a necessary step. Certain precautions may not be enough to protect your belongings if you live in a known danger zone. Your safety is a priority; never try to save material goods at the cost of your health.

Why Hazavoid?

Hazavoid offers fully wireless solutions: the Hazavoid Wireless Alarm System (pictured above) and the Hazavoid Wireless Alert Beacon System come with a backup battery and solar panels.

Able to be mounted on poles and walls, the Hazavoid devices provide full flexibility. Easily place them indoors or outdoor for maximum awareness. For instance, custom WiLAS tones are available to alert those around when and how to evacuate a building. Similarly, they can let anyone know when a danger is fully gone. The WiLERT beacons are able to activate automatically with the help of sensors. Place them strategically so they can detect anyone entering a danger zone and let them know with a flashing LED to turn around.
